Travel as a force for good in Peru’s Sacred Valley

Why education is the key to change

Sol y Luna is a unique property in Peru’s Sacred Valley of The Incas which is in the midpoint between Cusco City and Machu Picchu.

The hotel is made up of 43 casitas (villas or ‘little houses’) set within 328,000 square feet of mature gardens filled with flowers and hummingbirds.

Sol y Luna gardens

‘Skip Lima, skip Cusco, go straight to Sol y Luna in Urubamba! It is a slice of heaven on earth, amazing food, nestled in the Andes, gorgeous and extensive gardens, immaculate and beautiful rooms, I can’t say enough!’ Brinn, Sol y Luna guest who visited from Texas in June 2021.

Sol y Luna is a genuine example of a sustainable hotel with community lying right at the heart of its foundations.

Owners Petit and Franz have been in the Sacred Valley since the 1996 when they created a foundation in order to educate some of Peru’s most underprivileged children.

Sol y Luna Intercultural School

After volunteering in local schools, they set up their own school and decided that creating a hotel would be the best way to fund the school.

The Sol y Luna Intercultural School started with just 5 children, including the owners’ son and daughter, today it provides education and care for over 200 children, over 90% of whom come from backgrounds of extreme poverty.

‘Sol y Luna is an amazing and beautiful hotel to stay in Urubamba,’ wrote one of our guests on a TripAdvisor review. ‘You really feel the magic of the Sacred Valley during your stay. The staff makes your stay very pleasant with small details like putting water bottles every day in the casita and two hot-water bottles warming our bed. And the most gratifying thing is that this hotel has a wonderful project that with its profits helps by giving education to the children of the Sacred Valley with their Sol y Luna Association. So, I recommend 1000% this incredible place!’

The Sol y Luna International School educates and supports over 200 children from kinder through to secondary levels.

Guests at Sol y Luna, and visitors to the area, can arrange a visit to the Sol y Luna Foundation, see here for details. If you would like to learn more about how to get involved, see here for sponsorship, volunteering and partnership programmes.

Sol y Luna Foundation

Footprint

The name Footprint originally came from our newsletter and we decided to use it for the Sol y Luna blog as well. Footprint fits well with the concept of Sol y Luna: our hotel was founded to support the local community. Leave footprints of kindness wherever you go.
