Visiting the Sol y Luna Foundation

Many guests come to Peru to see Machu Picchu, but leave saying it was their visit to the Sol y Luna Foundation that will stay in their hearts forever.

Visiting the School or Home

We offer half or full-day programmes enabling visitors to Peru to share time with the children of the Sol y Luna Foundation.

Our immersive visits take you to the Sol y Luna School during term time and weekdays.

Whilst those who visit during weekends or school holidays may share time with the children at the Sol y Luna Home.

“We did not know about the Sol y Luna Foundation,” says Lindsay who stayed at Hotel Sol y Luna during her honeymoon. “It changes the whole meaning of our stay – an eye opener!

Four Projects

Established in 1998, the Sol y Luna Foundation focusses on education and has four core projects:

  • The Sol y Luna School
  • Paqari for special needs support
  • The Sol y Luna Home
  • Roots & Wings for further education

“I’m so glad we took the time to step into the school,” says Timothy who visited with his kids. “These are the kind of connections we want our children to have… local, genuine, true, well done on the hard work!”

Classtime

Financial Times travel editor Maria Shollenbarger lists the Sol y Luna Foundation among top “philanthropic opportunities for next-gen travellers keen to effect good change in the world, while also seeing a bit of it.”

Among top examples, the Financial Times article cites “…the Sacred Valley-based Sol y Luna Foundation to put clients face-front in the Sol y Luna school, where they can gain teaching and educational-administration experience…”

The article refers to our three month volunteer programme, see more details here.

“On our last day we visited the school,” said Helen R who stayed at Hotel Sol y Luna in June 2023. “We met some of the children and donated some small items we had brought from the UK. This was a humbling experience but was great to see all the happy smiling faces. We will definitely be back for another visit.”

Footprint

The name Footprint originally came from our newsletter and we decided to use it for the Sol y Luna blog as well. Footprint fits well with the concept of Sol y Luna: our hotel was founded to support the local community. Leave footprints of kindness wherever you go.
